6 previous owners, 84,000miles, 4 new tyres, running engine but needs attention.....erm & thats all I know about it as I aint even spoken to its current owner yet - my mouse clicked Buy-It-Now & the rest is history!! LOL! Hopefully pick it up this week sometime & I'll get some more pics of it - havent got a clue where I'm going to put it yet....aah well!!  Looks like she has potential anyway!!!

Gonna fix it up, tax & MOT it & probably bring it to Trax & have it up For Sale then - I just want to do my bit for keeping them alive!!! 8) 8) 8)

Latest news.....just spoke to the owner....

Last time it was MOTd was approx a year ago, 4 new tyres, headgasket was replaced plus a few other bits - 4 days later it developed a problem whereby it would start, idle, rev up but refused really to go anywhere without coughing & spluttering.....(MAP sensor or throttle potentiometer methinks)...anyway rear arches are MINT (apparently) and theres a small dint in the rear door & a patch of rust on the other......

Sounds like it'll be on the road before I know it....!!! :P :P :P :P

Nice one Lee!

Believe it or not but I'm sure I viewed this car about 4 years ago when I eventually bought FLU (Andy Rabson now owns it). I think I viewed it in the Northhampton area.

Seem to remember it had a damp boot for some reason, clean straight car, the guy wanted about 2K for it at the time.

Well done Lee, another saved, added to the old database, not many more to find now.....

Latest update...

Picked the Quadra up on Saturday - got it from Northampton to Derby anyway - it will be making the journey from Derby to Liverpool hopefully this weekend!!!

Anyway - we got there & once I'd smacked the starter motor with a hammer a couple of times it started up no probs. Its got a bit of a missfire especially under load but I reckon (hope) its something simple-sensor wise anyway.

Bonus points at first glance.....

Full Set of Samco Boost hoses....in purple???!!! LOL,
Twin Piston Dump Valve,
Full Set of proper RCA leads through to boot & main power cable for stereo,
He left 10 Mini Discs in the glovebox,
New set of jump leads in the boot,
Emergency triangle in boot (ideal for Belgium!),
Interiors in very good condition,
Sunroof works!!!!
Rear windows work!!!!
Alloys in very good condition with 4 brand new tyres
Newish Battery
3.5G of fuel LOL!

Bad Points at first glance....

Needs a headlight,
Needs a new front bumper or at least the bottom splitter (has anyone got one please!)
Misfire especially when under load
Rear calipers need freeing off (theres a shock!)
Couple of dents on a few panels - could do with a bit of paint here & there,
1 Rear arch needs attention
Diff Lock switch doesnt work (shock!)
Probably Starter Motor
Few engine pipes need replacing (check out the PTFE repair on the turbo water feed!!!!)

Few pics....

So I'm still very happy with my purchase despite its little problems but hey....cant have everything....it is a 21Turbo at the end of the day!!!

Only bad thing that happened was that the guy took the keys back off me to remove his keyring....then forgot to give me them back - so had to drive to Derby to give them to me!!! PMSL!!

Latest update....

The quadra is now all tucked up in its new home - a friends garage!!!

Going to do change the headlight & clean the brakes up & stick it in for its MOT hopefully this week!!!

Still need black parts for it otherwise it will be an embarrassment at Trax!!! LOL! PLLLLEASE HELP!!!

Lee_R21Turbo
29-08-2006, 10:18 PM
Well......I've been a right busy boy today!!!

When I realised at 12:30pm this afternoon that it was in fact Trax 2006 on Sunday....I decided I really needed to get my arse into gear and make an effort to at least turn up in a Renault 21 Turbo of sorts!!!

So a quick phone call to HIC saw me insured for the pricely sum of ?230 (thanks guys) on one of their classic policies.....MINT!!!

So then I get onto the proper jobs in hand.....MOT & getting it to run right as it really didnt like any kind of load & it would jerk, bunny hop & alsorts!!! So I went & picked it up from where its dry garaged & had an interesting snail pace 7 mile drive back to my place!!!

So now it was approximately 2pm & I had an MOT booked for 5pm!!!! Best get my skates on....

Then I proceeded to do change the following....

Flywheel sendor, throttle body & throttle position switch, coil, spark plugs, rotor arm & dizzy. I changed the water hose from the oil cooler to the metal pipes as this was split & pissing out, cleaned out the pipe that runs down the side of the head as this was blocked solid & unblocked the thermostat housing connection that leads to this pipe (common fault) and swapped the headlight.

So its now 4:30pm & I've got to travel 7 miles to the garage that its getting MOT'd at so off I go.

4:55pm & literally quarter of a mile away from the garage.....disaster strikes 21 Turbo styleee & a hose blows!!!! :o :o :o ...and of course it goes without saying that its the fiddliest hose in the engine bay - the 90deg rubber bend that joins the metal pipe to the bottom of the thermostat housing!!! After letting it cool down I whack some water in it (lucky I had some-6th sense!!) go to start it &....ah....the batteries given up the ghost!!! Time to phone the garage for a bump start!!! My mate comes round we jump it & off we go 2 the garage!!!

So whilst the guys doing the MOT stuff I get in his way & faff round fixing the pipe - luckily I managed to cut & move it up so all is good!! Now to the MOT bit.....can you guess what it failed on.....

.....come on guys this is easy......

....nope you all got it wrong...........

IT DIDNT FAIL ON ANYTHING!!!! :bla: WHOOOOOPEEEEE!! LOL! Got a couple of advisorys nothing particularly major - exhausts occasionally rubbing on prop, couple of bulbs!!! 8) 8) 8)

So it needed a jump start so I could get it back home - so then I gave it a quick wash as a celebration, fitted a Kenwood headunit, fitted a bleed valve (& turned it up!! AHEM!), changed the battery, then tucked it back up in the garage!!! :P :P

So all being well I should have a 21 Turbo at Trax - albeit not MINT as no-ones got any black parts!!! :( :( :(

Oh & she turned 84,000 miles today too!!! :D :D :D

Cool mate, and 4 years quicker than mine too LOL

Gotta LOVE those 90 degree coolant hoses.

EXHAUST UPDATE TIME.......

After using a large crowbar to move the exhaust system out of the way of the propshaft........i seemed to have created a whole load of holes in the system - so it gave me an excuse to make up a new stainless system for it......oh yeah & its 3" from the downpipe!!! 8) 8) 8)

Few pics of how I got on today....

I needed to makeup a flange (I love that word  FLANGE!! Ahem!) somehow to connect the 3" system to the standard downpipe...so heres what I did - bear in mind this wont be staying as I will do a 3" downpipe at some point - this is just to get me to Belgium etc...

Started by chopping the end off the standard system,,,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2625Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2624Medium.jpg

Test fitted it into a piece of 2.5" stainless tube..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2626Medium.jpg

Cleaned it up ready for welding...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2627Medium.jpg

Once I welded it I needed to attach the other part of the FLANGE that keeps the join together....

So I filed the standard connector out until it fitted round the 2.5" stainless tube like so...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2622Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2623Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2628Medium.jpg

So now this was done.....I needed to somehow attach a piece of 3" tube to this 2.5" tube.....heres how I did it....I know its not pretty but its functional & will do for now....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2634Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2636Medium.jpg

Now a few more shots of the rest of the system starting with a few of the necessary materials...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2618Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2629Medium.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Exhaust/DSCF2641Medium.jpg

Conclusion.....

Its loud....LOL....& its low - about 3.5 - 4" ish off the deck as it goes under the diff - gonna have a fiddle around & see if I can raise the left hand side a tad not that a couple of mm is going to make much difference really - cossies get away with it so hopefully I will!! Unfortunately my welding gas ran out half way through welding everything up, so when I get my refil delivered I'm going to take if off again & re-weld it up again - not easy welding with no gas - pigeon **** springs to mind!!!

Might invest in a centre box too to quieten it down a bit at some point.

The picture under the car was taken with all my welding gear in the boost so in reality its not actually that low lol - came over via a few speedhumps but only actually ever so slightly scraped one of them - the biggest one!! LOL!  Best bit was I didnt use the large bendy section which cost ?40 so that can go back!

TODAYS UPDATE.....

Fitted & mended & few bits & pieces today....

First being my WAFT gauge - nifty bit of kit this - does water temp, boost pressure & A/F (narrowband) & also can control your radiator fans.

I've only used it for boost pressure & water temp for the time being...

Right then....I needed to fit the water sendor somewhere - & I soon found the ideal place...

Hey presto - we have an installed sendor!!! 8)

This is what the unit looks like incar...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Gauges/DSCF2651Medium.jpg

After that I fixed my LCD display as it wasnt illuminating, replaced the clear cracked plastic panel covering the dashboard, fixed the ciggy lighter, fixed the Diff Lock switch for all of 5 mins until it popped out again, ripped out all the old alarm wiring & last but not least fitted a set of 16" alloys I had lying around in the garage....BeerMonster might recognise these!!! :P :P :P

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/Gauges/DSCF2653Medium.jpg

But unfortunately the turbo has spat its dummy right out & it now smokes 100 a day - so I need to find a replacement ASAP!!!

LAAAAAAAAAAAAATEST UPDATE!!! LOL!

Inbetween getting the Bora MOTd, visiting the eye hospital to remove rusty shards of metal out my mince pies oh & getting pulled for not wearing a seatbelt (AHEM!) I've been doing the following today....

Take one old.....but still very useable downpipe (off my old red Phase 2!) with a lambda bung welded in....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2654Medium.jpg

...and some heatwrap....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2655Medium.jpg

...add the two together & you get....surprise surprise...

a nice & cosy wrapped up downpipe.....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2656Medium.jpg

Then next - clean up a few bits of old pipe until they are looking BLING like this....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2657Medium.jpg

Also clean up a wastegate housing for my donor turbo....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2659Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2658Medium.jpg

Next its time to get down & dirty & get to removing the old turbo unit...

Ah look surprise surprise......the 17mm nuts are being bastards...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2662Medium.jpg

...what the hell is this monstrosity lurking beneath????

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2663Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2664Medium.jpg

Ah yes of course....its my oil feed pipe...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2663Medium.jpg

A bodge pikey Sibbers would be proud to put his name to!!!!

Ahhh look another common fault...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2666Medium.jpg

Now this is where I'm hoping I'm getting the smoke from...a cracked housing...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2667Medium.jpg

Very odd that this back wheel is clean as it is tho the amount of smoke that was billowing out...but still...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2668Medium.jpg

...and yes...I knew my exhaust was still blowing even after doing my system...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2669Medium.jpg

Well unfortunately nothing much to report - dont know where the time went last nite but 5 hours managed to pass me by without me getting much done - or so it seemed.......had a bit of a stress removing exhaust housing bolts & the like - then the two halves of the new core and an older exhaust housing wouldnt mate up properly without the exhaust wheel blades touching the housing......

Pics of what I managed to achieve....

Old turbo was definately donald ducked.....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2679Medium.jpg

Managed to clean up all the bolts, brackets, drop bracket etc. Taking the day off work today to crack on with it - need to attack the exhaust housing with a wire brush attachment to hopefully get both mating surfaces flat so I dont have any more issues with it!!!

Watch this unsmokey space.....

AWESOME UPDATE......Cinders will go to the ball....or rather Belgium & The Nurburgring!!! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Finally sussed what was causing me issues with re-assembling the turbo....

This crack was - it was slightly raised on one edge....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2684Medium.jpg

So rather than do the bodging thing - I went on an exhaust housing hunt for a better article....and here she is....isnt she beauty! LOL! That crack is the ONLY crack on the whole unit which surpised me no end...only other bad thing is the stud that sheared off in the housing....the very last one - all the rest came out MINT after a bit of heat! Sods law!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2683Medium.jpg

I used all new gaskets & bolts where possible..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/ChangeTurbo/DSCF2686Medium.jpg

Turbo all assembled & ready to slot into the bay....

And the difference its made is unbelievable - goes like a bloody train now...well impressed...oh & NO NO NO SMOKE! LOL! I'm gonna keep it to a sensible 16/17psi I think - no need for more than that - need reliability over the next few days!!!

Time for an update guys - its been a while since I've let people know what I have planned & what I've been doing!!!

This time in 3 weeks I'll be at the Nurburgring again with the trusty track Quadra...well providing I get everything done!!!

My list of jobs to do before the ring trip 6 weeks ago was as follows....

Interesting issue would that be phase 2 sump but the main bearing caps are not tapped for the extra phase 2 sump fixings?

Hope thats the case anyway as I plan on fitting a phase 2 sump to a phase 1 block.

fixing a ph2 sump on a ph1 aint a problem...

fixing a ph1 on ph2...problem ! the holes in the sump (timingbelt side and gearbox side 2x2 ) aint big enough. You need to drill true the Ph1 sump (4x)

My mates pearl one suffered from that sort of clearance, until he drove the car and the engine repositioned it self in the radiator. Found out the engine mounts were shot. Replaced the mounts and rad., and it happened again, this time the engine mount ripped the subframe out.:faint: Your motor is coming good though:good:

Few people have had damaged subframes, bit of a weird occurance tbh, not sure if its down to power or the way in which the engine has gone back in at some point after being out!!

Thinking of making some sort of brace for the top of the engine to mount to the top cross member to help with adverse movements!!!

Mattfletcher
21-03-2007, 11:18 AM
That happened when my mate was running 4x4 cossie internal hybrid, the kick off it was unreal, the turbo didnt last long whether it was built wrong or set up wrong I dont know. Saying that the pearl white 21 was always a nightmare for as long as I knew it.

Usually when the lump is dropped in and the studs dont locate in the holes.....the weight pushing down on the stud damages the subframe.....add to that the strain it gets from everyday ragging its no surprise looking at the construction. Add to that the reinforcing plate Renault put underneath was only spot welded on and can drop off on engine refitting without anyone noticing....
Its an easy repair though, I plate them with 5mm steel and extend bracing out so its super reinforced, with a seam weld. Im sure you did summat similar my Scally buddy?

did it have a private plate on it, and was chipped by bbr?

Mattfletcher
22-03-2007, 01:33 AM
Thats the one, the bloke who bought it off my bro took the plate off and it was then on a J reg. It said tuned by bbr 250-260bhp on the boot in blue decals.

craig21t

and it had a bad boy nosecone? if so i went up to buy the car, a while ago, and it was in a poor state bodyworkwise, and when he started it up, it knocked for about 7or8 seconds.

Mattfletcher
22-03-2007, 10:12 PM
Yes that will be the one, the paint was not the best on the nose cone, there was rust just in front of the ariel, there was a hole on the jacking point passenger side front, the drivers door was damaged where the check strap had broken, there was a dent on the bonnet where the Renault decal was. And I think the knocking was due to the crank needing regrinding. Where was that for sale and how much, is it still there?

Mattfletcher
23-03-2007, 08:40 PM
The pearl one was owned by my bro and then it went to Telford bought by the same guy who bought Rogs old white J plate 21 (he had that about 2 years ago, i think), then he sold it to someone in West Brom, then the people who were originally going to buy it off my bro bought it and that is when it was in Great Barr

UPDATE TIME AGAIN GUYS......well after a couple of days hard graft at the weekend and a couple of late nights shes finally got a back end on, wheels, straight suspension & an exhaust!!! :splits: :splits:

Got to say a big thanks to Tony for coming down and giving me a hand this weekend, it was very much appreciated and needed - both morally (keeping me sane) and the extra person being there always helps!!! Thanks mate...

Anyway - as usual a few pics - havent taken many as I forgot! LOL!

Ripped out the old clutch hydraulics and re-sealed the clutch slave cylinder...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/PreRingWork/21032007380Medium.jpg

Fitted a proper convertor so I cud use the Phase 2 pedal with the phase 1 clutch system that one of my mates made up for me instead of my last bodged attempt... (original,my bodge, my mates proper item)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/PreRingWork/21032007377Medium.jpg

After a few minor cockups, mainly forgetting to fit a seal into the clutch master cylinder I finally had a proper smooth working clutch for the first time since I've had the car!! LOL!

Wrapped the clutch line in heat reflective tubing to stop it getting too hot whilst caning it round the ring...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/Lee_R21Turbo/Quadra/PreRingWork/24032007382Medium.jpg

Once this was done I was able to fit the downpipe, no pics as yet but will take some of the bay next time I'm down at the car!

Tested the XRD display which turned out to be a tad frustrating as the wires inside the 9Pin connector on the rear were destroyed to hell so will have to resolder them before it gets properly wired in...

Then I forgot to get pics of the next bit prop, beam etc as we got proper stuck in - had to remove the beam from my spare quadra, I then managed to shear the rear diff mounting bolt when refitting it to my car so we had fun with that - again will get pics of this when I'm down at the car...

Anyway...beam on, wheels on, Koni's on & exhaust on...

Tonights update.....

My new gauges arrived today, only cheapies but I wanted to see how the oil pressure was after fitting new big ends & the oil pump. Also the oil temperature was of particular interest to me as after all this is my track toy and the oil was getting waaaay too hot for my liking after a good thrashing, so as you know I've fitted my oil cooler so I want to see how its performing. Lastly the water temperature gauge came with the set so I'm thinking of using this as a pre-intercooler air temp gauge - I'm curious as to the temperature of the air before the intercooler as it exits the turbo, again when its getting hammered!!!

Anyway....picture time...

The AutoGauge gauges I got where a little bit toooo chav for my liking so they got anti-chavved...

Mounted in their DIN sized mount
