View Full Version : Red Ph1 :)
Well it's nearly finished :D
This is the red ph1 that craig and I found in a hedge @ mike's place. Had been there for some time (year's not months) minus it's gearbox (thanks kevin ;) ) and the engine was sitting on the front cross member (where the rad sits)
The bonnet wasnt on the car, it was on the floor in front of it, quite literally burried underneath overgrown vegetation! (we couldn't find it to start with)
No front bumper, no headlamps, no indicators, no rad, no brake vents etc etc you get the picture! Oh, and this red car was green ;) (in places)
It only had a couple of wheels on, and the front was suspended rather precariously by a scissor jack.
One thing I couldnt find anywhere on it was rust. Not anywhere. None. Not a sosij.
Inside was clean, only 89k miles :). Well. It was until we realised there weren't any keys for it :( So we decided that the easy thing to do was break the steering lock.... Easier said than done.
I wish I'd taken some photos of where it was, but i never thought :(
Will post more a bit later (with photos), or tomorrow (gotta go now, k8's just got home!)[/img]
here comes the thumb LOLOLOLOLOL

Cars that have been off the road for years....gives me a nervous tick
Well donr though mate. Takes some doing when theyre in that state!!
Craig sent me these photos. I'm not sure how long ago this was taken (again, I think it's years, not months). The car was in exactly the same place when we went to pick it up! The hedge was considerably larger and the brown bit of floor where the car was parked had turned into a meadow. It had much less things on the front end! (havent a clue what happened to the front bumper, cos it wasn't at Mikes!)

http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-ph1/poss-ph1-2.jpg
I think Mike had originally had the car for breaking, then realised how good it was and had kept it with the intention of putting it back on the road..... We all know how things get 'put off' lol (previous owners of the car include Matty C, Kevin from GTO and Radbourne Racing!)
This pic is when it got to my house. (the engine isnt actually fixed in there, it's just sitting there - it was the easiest way to transport the engine!)

So far I've done:
clean the engine bay
put engine + gearbox in + downpipe etc
Fitted a nearly new turbo (done less than 10k miles - was rescued from my dead grey ph1)
fit front bumper
headlamps
indicators
horn
battery tray
swap driveshafts
replace both front discs + hubs
make front brakes work
strip down + rebuild rear brake compensator thingy (there wasnt one on there, and I wondered why the brake fluid level was going down....)
fit rear shocks (weren't on there)
replace steering column
removed some dodgy immobiliser + remade the bloody loom :@
washed the car
started to T-cut and realised it just wasnt gonna work
G3'd it from head to foot
auto-glymmed it
removed green from window surrounds
replaced windscreen wipers
polished the scores out of the windscreen
removed the black plastic scuttle pannel (where the windscreen wipers are) and cleaned all the dead things out, polished.
New number plate
Lots and lots of other silly little things....
Things to do:
change gearbox oil
change engine oil
swap wheels for good ens
put n/s skirt on
boot spoiler!
make heater fans work
find out why temp guage doesnt work
make sunroof go ALL the way back (this is the first 21 i've had with even a partially working sunroof!)
fix one of the rear windows (doesnt work)
put brake vents on
stop exhaust from blowing (downpipe to centre section join)
Insure
MOT
Tax
Go for a blast!
Depending on how long I keep it for, it needs all belts changing

thats a nice shot ;) very artistic!
I just thought, it could be entitled "Nitromorse on your bonnet" pmsl :)
nice one joff, its good to see that car back up and running. I think i had a couple of bits off it, and no you can't have them back. From what i can remember it was bought for one of mikes family but never got used so just sat there until you saved it.

stop exhaust from blowing (downpipe to centre section join) Did this the other day
Insure Done
MOT Probably tomorrow

Fixed the dimmer switch
Removed some more random wires
Soldered the coil feed wires

Things left to do:
change gearbox oil
change engine oil
fix one of the rear windows (doesnt work)
put brake vents on
clean the carpet behind the passenger seat (oil got on it when we tranported an engine where the seat should go...)
Front fog lamps stopped working for some reason :S
Replace lights in lots of the interior switches
Find out why some other interior lights dont come on
Put the radiator plastic surround on.
Put a spare wheel, tools and boot carpet in.

That boot spoiler is pissing ME off as well now LOL
Woohoooooo! Passed MOT :D (ok, theoretically, it failed on a sidelight, but that's all it needed)
Just gonna wait til the end of the month so i can tax it :(
Things left to do:

The driveshaft seals dont look too clever so looks like i'll be changing those soon.
I've also changed the boot lock and the infra-red receiver, just got the two door locks to change.
While I was underneath doing the gearbox oil I remembered that i'd put new gearbox mounts on! (if i dont write it down here i'll forget again!)
I've replaced the speedo cable with a new one (the old one was damaged so wouldnt go in the hole :( )
Went for a drive yesteday :D nice! The f/n/s brake seems to be binding a little, so i need to strip that one down.
Things left to do:
change engine oil + filter
fix one of the rear windows (doesnt work)
put brake vents on
Replace lights in lots of the interior switches
Find out why some other interior lights dont come on

Might put a decent pair of fans on it too. (i.e. non-renault!)
I must stop putting things on this list....

Jesus, you'll be selling a minter then LOL
It must owe you about 4K inc labour
Jesus, you'll be selling a minter then LOL
It must owe you about 4K inc labour
Tell me about it!
Considering it owes me a gearbox, engine, low mileage turbo, headlamps, indicators, tyres, MOT and tax (the most expensive things i can think of, i've obviously put in millions of other things)
last gearbox i saw on ebay fetched ?290
engine ?50 ??
turbo ?150
headlamps ?40 pair?
indicators ?40 pair
tyres ?180
MOT ? 45
tax ? 96
------------------
?891
Like I say, aside from any of the other bits, and even if the car was free (which it wasnt) it 'theoretically' owes me a lot money!
Why the hell didnt I just break it.........

Because, like me, you are enamoured with a mental disorder which forces you to disregard the financial reprocussions when it comes to salvageable sheds, and fix em up despite it being as economical as a topfuel dragster.
I Did the same with the grey ph2.....bought it, recovered it from 265 miles away. Theres ?60 in fuel and 2 peoples labour for a full day just getting it home. Add to that the 2 engine swaps as the first engine I put in was shagged, the turbo swap as that was shagged too, rebulding all 4 calipers, the rad pipes, rad, cambelt.....god its depressing me already.
I Figure at a fair rate of labour allowance I made a ?300 LOSS on that car.....
Things left to do:
change engine oil + filter
done (even used Elf oil!) ?30
fix one of the rear windows (doesnt work)
put brake vents on
Replace lights in lots of the interior switches
Find out why some other interior lights dont come on
Put the radiator plastic surround on.
done
Put a spare wheel, tools and boot carpet in.
done
Boot spoiler!!!
Gearbox seals
f/n/s brake
done
Door locks
Might put a decent pair of fans on it too. (i.e. non-renault!)
done, got a decent pair of original ones
Also done the cambelt + tensioner + both aux belts (?70)
flushed the water system + replaced with mostly antifreeze (?15)
(so that's another ?115 to add to the list)
Does anyone want to buy this damn thing off me?! So far i've done about 400 miles in it, and if i've still got it, it'll be going to Belgium.
Things left to do:
fix one of the rear windows (doesnt work)
put brake vents on
Replace lights in lots of the interior switches
Find out why some other interior lights dont come on
Boot spoiler!!!
Gearbox seals
Door locks
sell it in belgium !
sell it in belgium !
I'd love to, d'you think anyone would buy a right-hand-drive car?!
you think so ?
There are not 21T's left in Belgium. Maarten/Gilbert, guy's from holland and comming to trax, stole the last quadra in belgium. Prices are not like in France but its going that way.
In the french parts off belgium there's a ph1, very bad condition, even to bad to be a sparecar, sold for almost 2000? (1360?). And when i say bad condition, than its ready for the shredder.
Long time no post...
I did the fans the other day (the sibley specials). I didn't use the fitting kit, I did it my way ;)
I used an old bumper for spacers! It's rough, but it'll do for now ;)

Question....why did you space the fans out mate???
Nice job on the head anyway!! LOL!
cos i didnt like the idea of the sharp edge of the plastic sitting against the rad, thought it might rub, even with the sticky pads.... Just me being safe.
Lee_R21Turbo
16-04-2007, 08:21 PM
If you look at the fans mate - they actually sit about 5mm off the radiator with the shroud sitting directly on the radiator so they shouldnt rub unless the blades somehow warp!!
it wasnt the blades that i was worried about - it's the shroud itself! I'd rather there was nothing sitting directly against the fins.

Do I see another ph2 dash conversion there?:good2:
Thought I was the only one that did it lol!
ah - 'fraid not - there're two cars there - a ph1 and a ph2! But I must admit, i prefer the ph2 interior and the ph1 exterior ;)
Maybe when I feel bored oneday...

quite a bit of weight that sound deadening, and sounds like your in a proper rally car:waah: , but its that loud now, im thinking of using ear defenders on the trip:waah:
Mattfletcher
17-04-2007, 10:26 PM
That sound deadening weighs a ton. At my old place they used to buy packs of ten sheets (10inch x 25 inch??) and the box had to weigh about the same as 2 starter motors. It is hoprrible stuff to apply:doh:
craig21t
17-04-2007, 10:43 PM
lmfao, if you think its bad to apply, try stripping it out after its been stuck on for over 10 years

:hahm: I think I will have to take a rain check on that one
And how did you melt your foot Craig...?
DaveL485
18-04-2007, 12:17 PM
There's gotta be the weight of a crank in there....20keys or so? Plus the padding and carpet.
I reckon I removed the weight of a person from inside. So far.
