Allready then...

As promised, the tread for the ductile liners, mounted in the rebuild engine. Today, 04/02/2010, the "naked" bottomend is at motoreco. This is a company who do all my skim's/regrinds/others. The bottom-end goes in the jacuzzi for a clean. All the mechanical parts are out. From oiljets to blankplugs, even the oilpumpdrive. The pistons/rods gonna get polished and weighted. If there's a diff. in weight, it will be adjusted.

Pics will come tomorow, when i picked up the engine.

If the rods are standard, it would great to read how much differance in wieght there is between them etc.

Phil got the cup style rods. Standard material but smoothed in the corners for less resistance. The pistons dont have diff. weights.

back on topic now:

take a piece off paper and drawn the head/valves in an order that you cant forget there position.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding074.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding074.jpg)

Take the valves out and put them in bags with the same number as on the drawing.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding075.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding075.jpg)

Remove the valveseals, dont demage the guides.

Take the new valveseals that you find in the hg-set.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding081.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding081.jpg)

Set the new valveseals, i'll do it with a long 13. Make sure there straith on, its soft material so fubar before you now it.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding084.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding084.jpg)

Turn the head in a position that you can work on top and bottom for replacing the valves (cleaned valves/seats/springs already, thats not discribed in the picture) Note, these valves didnt need a regrind.
Obvious, place them back in the position like you numbered them.

Replace the cam, slide it in from the frontside wich is the pouly-side:
note: use oil !!!
When the cam is in place, put some oil in the holes on top off the head and turn the cam arround.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding100.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding100.jpg)

Replace the camseal with a proper tool, dont use a screwdriver as ive seen before. The camseal can be find in the hg-set.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding103.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding103.jpg)

Because on off the headbolts/endcapbolts wasnt going smooth, there was some restauration needed (lol). I'll hope someone can translate it because i dont know the exact englisch word for it. Anyway, the holes in the bottomend, for headbolts and endcapbolts are M12x1.5 (normal M12=1.75) wich means that its thinner tread then usual. Must be a renault thing:biggrin:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding106.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding106.jpg)

After this ive replaced the oiljets. It is important that you put any kind off seal on the bolt that attached the jet on to the bottomend. Why ? 3 of the holes are true the head, its an open hole to the outside of the block.
I prefer Dirko, thats what they use on powerboats and racingcars. Never had any problems with it and it dont loose when become hot. Heat and oilresistant
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding107.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding107.jpg)

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding108.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding108.jpg)

In the previous pics you can see that the crankbearings are placed on the bottomend. They come with 4 bearings with oilgroove and holes (bottomend) and 4 with holes (endcaps). Put the crank in position.
note: dont forget the half moon bearing (cant remember the englisch word).
Use oil !!!

Jo
12-02-2010, 03:39 PM
i'm already after it...thx for asking. Its a payen hg-set and also bottom-end gasket set.

Back to the pics now and the reason for this topic: liners-pistons

Ring fitment: Always put the gaps 180° and always put the gaps in the same direction as the gudionpin. Never on the blank side of the psiton.
These ring (ARIAS, chrome/steel rings) have 3 piece oilscraps, second ring and topring. First put the oilscrape ring on, then the 2 thing ones to keep it in place. The bottom one on the left side guidionpin, the top one on the right side. Reason for this is to reduce compression losses. The 2de ring, gap on the left side again from the gudionpin, top ring gap on the right side. Its pure logical.

After this take the liners and use lots of oil, the more oil , the better the pistons goes in.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding116.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding116.jpg)

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding117.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding117.jpg)

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding118.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding118.jpg)

Put the piston in the tool to slide them in the liners, again, use lots off oil:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding119.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding119.jpg)

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding120.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding120.jpg)

place the piston on the bottomside from the liners. I did it from the bottomside so there couldnt be marks or demages on the topside from the pistontool.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding123.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding123.jpg)

Tap in the piston, gently ! Make sure it goes straith in. When you got blocked or the feeling that it dont goes smooth, pull it back out and start all over again.

Repeat this with the 3 other liners/pistons:

You can find the crankseals in the bottomendgasketset:

Seal and tool togheter:

Put some oil on you're finger and rub the gasket in, not to much, just enough that the seal is wet and put the seal in:

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding141.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding141.jpg)

With this tool you cant push the seal to deep or demage the seal. Its got a spring inside:

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding142.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding142.jpg)

Bring the bearing for the primaryshaft (gearbox) in place:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding143.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding143.jpg)

Manifold for other applications then the std T3.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding150.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding150.jpg)

The reason for this is because T34/gt-series and other have the flat flange, the best thing to do is skim the flange on the manifold so it becomes flat to. Remove the studs, this can be sh*ty:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/th_mini-Afbeelding152.jpg (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/?action=view&current=mini-Afbeelding152.jpg)

The manifold is brought in this afternoon for the skim, the same with the wastegate. Pick up on thuesday.

Kate kicked me out of the kitchen  I'm in the garage at home and my b*lls are freezing. Not much pics to follow, just fitted the liners/pistons in the bottomend:

First liner fitted:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/Afbeelding163.jpg

Before fitting the liners, make sure the linerseal is in place.Check liner n°4, small black gasket arround the liner. Obvious, slide it further down:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/Afbeelding165.jpg

Also, before you trow the liner in the bottomend, fit the big end bearing in to the rod attached on the piston:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/joke222/phil%20rebuild%20feb%202010/Afbeelding166.jpg

1 & 4 fitted, i must say...perfect fit !

If you are refering to this thread http://21toc.com/showthread.php?27890-Oil-jets-(Again) the end result was that the Arias pistons got machined down so the skirts were the same hieght/ depth as standard pistons and so far all is OK

The engine in the pic's is project 'B' (Bloody long time to complete) and may be taken apart again as I have changed my mind again on spec level.

naked engine in the car attached to the gearbox. Clutch slave cilinder replaced, starter motor replaced. Some parts like the oilconnection have to be cleaned and sprayed. Thats gonna happen today. After that i'm start with the powersteering and spannersytem that is still attached on the car.

NOTE: The timingbelt kit from ebay has the Ph1 spannersystem (with spring!) and have no markline (timingline's) on the belt ! When used make sure that crank and cam are in the exact position !

PS: Phil, i'll mounted a new spanner (ph2) SKF on the engine. Didnt use the springtype.

Replaced is the wrong word, repositioned better. Its the same slave, but missed the rubber cover. If you want i can replace it with anoter one ? But i need to now it asap.

Update: 8 march 2010

Liners: tested
Result: positive
Boost: tested till 25 psi (1.7 bar) , mapped at 23 psi (1.5 bar)
wheelpower (high temp.): 247.9
wheelpower (normal temp): 255
enginepower (high temp.): 292
enginepower (normal temp.): 303
wheeltorque (high temp): SAE 390nm (288 Lbft)
wheeltorque (normal temp): SAE 418nm (308 Lbft)
torque flywheel (high temp): 459 nm (338.5 Lbft)
torque flywheel (normal temp): 492 nm (363 Lbft)

Groupbuy for the liners get started. Offcourse the people that helped us with donations for the testliners have the first serve.
Again, thank you for the donations. It helps to create new parts and keep the 21's alive (and kicking).

danb
08-03-2010, 01:25 PM
wow surprising the amount of difference in torque at the different temperatures. What temperatures out of interest?

Jo
08-03-2010, 01:28 PM
75°-85° normal temp

90°-100° high temp

Didnt had accurate readings on the oiltemp, gauge was a bit dodgy. The more testfigures whe have, the better. Its always handy when you have to compare cooling (overall)

High engine/water temp. has a negative effect on the air inlet.temp. Its just logic. Compare it when you drive on a cold misty morning and an afternoon with 30° sunshine (when that ever happens).

Excellent news Jo

I may be needing a set of liners now as mine are rusty, do you know the cost of the rebuild in the end?

what do you exactly mean with rebuild Craig ? The whole off it ? Incl bearings (mains/bigends), all gaskets, waterpump, timingbelt ...blablabla ???

pff, difficult to say. Parts are more expansive over here then in UK. Thats why i'm ordering most of it over there.

This is what you need for a regular rebuild:
-headgasketset
-bottomendgasketset (only avaible ph1), for ph2 you need strngt.plate gasket and sump gasket.
-waterpump
-timingbeltkit
-headskim
-pistonrings
-powersteering belt
-waterpump/alt belt
-coolant
-oil & filter
-gearbox oil
-powersteering oil
-sparkplugs
-dizzycap and rotor
-main bearing
-big ends

think that those are the most parts you need...start looking for prices. Told Jon last weekend that i would be arround 500£, pure guess.

Don't you change the crank and rod bearings?

So around £500 would cover everything bar the Liners.

I've bought an engine off Make Everything so will be fitting that to hopefully get the Quadra back in use, I then want to rebuild the original engine (with a few improvments along the way, like Ductile Liners)
