View Full Version : Red Quadra :)
Well, the dust has settled a little, my grey ph1 has gone :'( (seems to be a good home) and now there's a little time to upload a few piccies of my new baby.
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0001.jpg
She's an H reg quadra and has been rather badly neglected over the years. The nosecone, both front wings, bonnet and drivers side rear door have all been resprayed in a colour that nearly matches the original!! You cant really tell once you polish her up.
I couldnt believe how badly the paint had faded when i first saw her, but after a little elbow grease and a loads of t-cut and autoglym, there's actually some really good paintwork under there.
strange fading on rear wing:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0019.jpg
bit of cleaning:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0020.jpg
nearly there:

wow!!:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0022.jpg
The nosecone has been (badly) debadged and filled, and (badly) resprayed. I think there's probably a defect in every single panel - lol.
She's mostly rust free, apart from the odd little bit from lack of cleaning + protection. Both rear doors have badly rusted through at the arch, but the arches on the car are good.

There's a nasty dent just under the rear quarter lights on both sides of the car where someone apparently tried to remove them with a crow bar
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0007.jpg
Someone removed the "go faster stripes" with a stanley knife
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0006.jpg
The main fault with the car was a suspected bent subframe. The front wheels were towing out by about 3 inches.... The wishbone + bottom ball joint and flexi brake hose had already been replaced when i had her. Lots of investigations, measuring and swearing revealed that the n/s front strut was as bent as a banana! Having replaced that, the front wheels are still towing out, but only by a fraction, so i'll get her aligned. I cant see any fault in the front subframe (and neither can the tape measure), so fingers crossed and hopefully the only problem at the front was the strut. We'll find out when i take her to be tracked and then go for a spin!
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-1/pict0010.jpg
So - I just need a front wing to make her look a bit better, and she's got some rather nice 15" 5 spoke alloys (looks good + keeps the handling :) )
Engine wise, there seems to be a boost leak somewhere but that's something to play with next week :)
And the interior.... Hmmm Not too bad I spose, but i'll be needing little bits and pieces. Typical that i dont have any ph2 bits :(
Post more soon, with more pics :D

Well done Joff!!!
It's all worth while when the paint work comes up like that aint it!!
I got a passenger wing on ebay at the moment:

If you bid for it mate I'll post it for you mate(I'll package it up nicely and even go halves on the postage  should'nt be more than a tenner) only problem being it's white  .
Well done for keeping another Quadra on the road
might take you up on that wing. I can pick up from sandbach - I live in west wales, but my sister and a few mates live in stoke, I used to live there too.
Any chance of a closer photo of the rust?
It's got to be worth ?2.50 ;)
Cheers :D

are you winning with your beauty?
i've always been gorgeous, thanks
figured out what the "boost leak" was....
When i bought the car, i was told that the little pipe on the map sensor had snapped off, and that it'd been replaced. With one off a saab... :S I presume that the one he'd used was off a n/a car, either that or they're just not compatible (they look the same tho..!) So the car was running fine on tickover, but really struggled with any boost (hence i think it was a 1 bar map sensor). Swapped that over, and hey presto - a car that pulls :)
Started ripping out the interior yesterday. The car has had a tracker, an alarm and some random wiring looms fitted at some point. Been fun just pulling balls of wires out, throwing them over my should and muttering "dont need this..... and that......" lol
The last stereo was fitted by means of terminal/connector/chocolate block so I was presented with a mass of stripped wires. A while later, with a soldering iron and lots of heat shrink, i've got an ISO connector :)
Next job is to find out why the fuel computer on the dash doesnt display anything :( I've tried a different dash (known good) but to no avail. Any clues would be welcome ;)
Also, there's a strange couple of connectors hanging down off the main loom, just underneath the fuses. I'll post a picture of them cos i havent a clue what they are for. There's nothing like that on the ph1 looms that i have. Maybe it's for a FF alarm?
I'll get some pics ready for my next post, cos just words are boring :(

lol joff :D u make me laugh :P i can imagine u just pulling stuff out, and saying that haha... Any word on what we talked about?
Right - having pulled lots of wires out, i've now put a load of my own in, in the form of a CAT1 clifford :) That should stop me feeling quite so paranoid when I go visit my sis in stoke ;)
Still havent worked out why the fuel computer doesnt work, but I still havent properly looked at it :( A job for tomorrow methinks!
Stereo now has jbl's in the back and some nice kenwoods in the doors.
I've also brought back from sheffield the samcos, cossie air filter, uprated side cooler and the cossie main intercooler... guess where they're going!
Oh bugger - just come to take some pics off my camera, but i cant find the lead! oh well - pics tomorrow :D

lookin forward to them mate :D
right - found the damn lead to the camera now :)
Here's some pics of when i did the front strut:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-2/pict0002.jpg
While I was at it, I was trying to swap the big cast iron strut top off the original strut and put it on the donor one, cos the one on the donor was really badly corroded. So much so that two of the bolts were 2 mm smaller! While i was knocking the 11mm socket onto the bolts, I must have damaged the bearings, cos when i put everything back together i got a "clunk" noise when turning the steering wheel.... so.....:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-2/pict0003.jpg
I've had that lying around for the best part of 5 years!
Take all apart:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-2/pict0005.jpg
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-2/pict0006.jpg
put new bearing in

if in doubt cover the bloody lot in black sticky stuff :D
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-2/pict0014.jpg
While I was doing the speakers in the front I discovered that the rather neat ally trim someone had put on, had been done rather badly and superglue had dribbled down the door card :(
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-3/pict0003.jpg
Ph1 door card:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-3/pict0004.jpg
Turned into ph2 :)
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-3/pict0006.jpg
Luckily I found some more random wires to remove: (and this was after I'd cleaned a lot of the inner wing up)
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-4/pict0001.jpg
Someone had turned the front vent into a useless peice of plastic:
http://j0ff.com/media/pics/red-quaddie-4/pict0006.jpg
Broken headlamp plastic :(

Classic bit of woodwork :) (hehe - the Morgan 21 turbo)

It wasnt me, I might add - just another "feature" I came across....

lol i meant F**K, I never knew about that one.
back to the subject..... The quadra's booked in on monday for the wing and the nosecone to be resprayed :) (and properly debadged at the front, not just a lump of cag botched in :S )
right, following on from the last post :)
Was not impressed with the respray the guy did. Very unimpressed infact. It all looked so well before he sprayed it, well prepped!
I havent paid him...
Well now i've got 4 doors, 2 frnt wings, a bonnet, a nosecone and a n/s skirt :) All in pretty damn good nick, just pink! (Cheers craig 8) )
And I also thought it was running a bit slow, and everyone said, "It's a quaddie, it's gonna feel slow" well I finally got round to fitting a boost gauge.
8psi
It also tied in with dave's "2psi per mark on the standard gauge"
So instead of pissing around with winding the actuator etc, i just swapped it for my other one ( -31 ). Now running at around 12 psi 8) happy days!!
Felt pretty damn quick last night - temperature around zero :)
So just need to get some door pins from mr renault (haven't a clue where the nearest dealership to me is!) and i'll be off :)
Hopefully should have a nicer car for the next time everyone sees it!
Still to do (in no particular order):
Change the seats
swap all doors (not looking forward to that... strip all doors down, swap electrics etc)
swap bonnet + wings + nose
Try and repair the droop in the rear bumper
Get the little triangle bit of trim that i forgot to get off Craig!
might swap my engine for the low mileage one
strip the brakes down and clean + copper slip
sort out front suspension (bushes)
put the cossie cooler on
put the bigger injectors and cossie fp regulator on
put the brake ducts on
polish the rest of the car...
repair the two dents in the rear quarters
swap the steering wheel
swap the entire dash!! (4 holes where a in-car mobile phone holder was)
make the sunroof work
put the strut brace on
try and find a quadra boot carpet thats in one piece (or repair the one i got)
And loads of other things i cant think of just now!

P.S.... let me know how much the door pins are when u find out, im missing one.
DaveL485

put the cossie cooler on
DONT DO IT
Also Door pins, when renewing, you'll need the brass bushes too. Now ill make you cry...
The pins are cheap enough, you'll need 8 of those.
The brass bushes, 2 per pin (top and bottom) 2 pairs per door (top hinge and bottom hinge) thats sixteen of em. ?3.75. EACH.
You can usually get away with the rears, but the fronts will all need doing as its these that wear not the pins, and cause door drop. Also if the pins sieze in you'll probably destroy them getting it all apart.
There is a special tool I made when I did the doors on Rabsons quadra, its wicked for gettin door pins out. LYNDON borrowed it about 18 months ago, if you are any more successful retrieving it than me you clan gladly borrow it.
LYN CAN I HAVE MY TOOL BACK PLEASE. (And ill send your topmounts this week lol)
re cossie cooler: why not?
brass bushes? Trust you to put a downer on things ;) Are they the same thing front and back? If so then i might be ok. We removed the doors off the dead car with a grinder and hacksaw! Just cut the hinges off the car. So i should have two extra sets of brass bushes on the hinges that are still on the rear doors :).... we'll see...
and thanks for the offer of the door pin removal tool 8) But i got one :) Havent checked to see if its the right size yet tho
DaveL485

But you'll very very likely damage the bushes getting them out. Soft metal, sat in there for years n years, not good.
Why do people steadfastly refuse to do things properly and part with some hard-earned?
And the cossie cooler....you have to hack up the front of the car and remove the proper strenghtening bar, it gets horrendous heat soak, still don't fit properly and sees minimal gain in throttle response, nowhere near enough IMO to offset all the negatives. After swapping directly from std to cossie on a customer car and trying it out it lost some of the 'punch' due to the slight change in response which is something I love.
Personally, I think removing that wing mounted cooler from its low set position with a dedicated bumper duct is a crap idea short of a phat frontmount...
i never said i wasn't gonna buy new brass thingies! But I aint gonna buy new things that i dont need! 8)
As for the cooler, I agree with you about the loss of the proper slam panel/strengthening bar. When first saw it I thought it looked pretty nasty and swore that I wouldnt do it....... :( I do have 1/4 inch flat steel bar to go in it's place but obviously isnt anywhere near as rigid.
Who said anything about removing the side intercooler?
My step dad has recently bought a volvo 940 turbo (or 960 - cant remember which) and couldnt help but notice there's a pretty damn huge cooler on that! Would make a nice front mount. I just need some thinner fans 8)

Except the endcaps are a bit skinny if you want bigger power, and according to the welsh wizard you need to be 'unkind' to the headlights to get it in....
All i'll say is Ive owned both cossie and volvo coolers at some point and sold em on without getting near the car....

Joff, steer clear of the Volvo cooler - you have to hack the headlights about no end, reverse fit a poxy R5 fan to one side of the radiator - only to have the cooler split on you the very moment you introduce it to some boost - the V960 runs about 7psi I think, you offer that cooler anything more than 16psi and it splits - my mate burst 3 in as many months.
The Cossie one, I'll argue the toss with Dave on that for ever and ever!!!!
Ill ask him this - that intercooler is used by the Sierra Cosworth, a car that comes with 220bhp out the box not 175bhp its situated on top of the rad in a Cossie, just as the std Reno one is, its all metal construction not half plastic so its stronger - and incidentally is still used as part of whats known as a stage 1 tune on a Cossie which roughly works out at 270-280bhp - this isnt one person using this cooler on an infinitely quicker car its a whole bloody casm of people - depending on who you talk to, the std cooler is generally good for about 280-290bhp - any further and you need either the RS500 jobbie or an FMIC - now seeing as the 21Turbo will only ever dream of being 280bhp in fact most will only dream of seeing a GENUINE 240BHP, I'd say it makes that particular cooler more than capable of doing a job. I do however fully expect Dave to come out and say that the engineers and technicians at RS are wrong and he is right
Oh and Joff - if ur planning on fitting a Cossie cooler, FMIC, Volvo or anything other than standard - you'll have to dump the wing mounted one - otherwise ur lag will be horrific - trust me I know
I'd post a pic, but someones cut the file upload sizes to summat nearer the avatar size lol

Yeah, wont be putting that on, was just a thought anyway. Things have become interesting around these parts. This red car will be finished off and sold as a standard car. There was a sale already setup for this but he backed out cos he lost his job :( As soon as she's back looking good i'll put her up for sale, see who's interested :)
btw - standard sierra cossie was 204 bhp ;)

Lee honey, I missed you
Cossie cooler
For....
Its all alloy.
Its the equivalent capacity to both std coolers. Ish.
Its fittable by 'most' diy-ers.
Proven capable of sustaining a 20% power increase on original car.
Against...
Fit quality is poor.
Positioning regarding airflow is poor.
Heat soak potential.
Requires removal of some strengthening increasing front end flex possibility.
Needs to be hacked about something horrible to fit.
Sits on top of the rad, resting on the rad.
Bonnet strut has nowhere to sit properly.
Looks a bit ropey when fitted for those who are concerned with cosmetics.
Std 21T coolers are capable of a 20% power increase (yeah I can upload the graph if you want.)
Feel free to add to the lists.... :D

Hi Joff,
Sorry to bother you but thats my old quadra :D , l sold it to a guy from Cambridge way around the beginning of 05, l had bought it from Stanstead in August 04 and ran around in it until the tax and mot ran out.
l will try and shead some light on things that l know about the car, on your early pictures of the marks on the rear spoiler, these came from my missis hanging some bleached carpets on the back of the car to dry out , the car was fitted with a clifford alarm that didn't work so l removed it (l only cut the alarm wire harness where it came into contact with the orginal loom). If you look at the sunroof l replaced the two plastic links that normally break, with some ones l made up out of metal. When l sold the car it was standard apart from it was fitted with a dump valve and boost gauge, the fuel gauge worked ok, but the diff lock didn't and it wasn't fitted with a radio (only the wires). It also had the normal nose cone fitted.
PS l spoke to the guy l sold it to last week, and he told me that he was the one who had crashed it  , he also said that he had sold it on thinking that the chassis was damaged.

Neat :)
I'd already traced it to you cos you've already posted on this forum about it before (while you owned it)
re the rear spoiler: pmsl :) It polished up nice tho ;)
The chassis is fine, and it would appear the subframe is too (all measures fine) The only thing left to do on the front suspension is to replace the strut top bearing, it's making the 'clunk' sound...
I found a clifford alarm module under the centre console trim! If you've read the thread, you'll know that it's got another clifford in it, but this time it works :)
The sunroof doesnt work again.... I think someone's put some metal clips in place of the plastic ones and they're fouling it up :D lol :D
I've got 4 new doors and bonnet and both front wings to go on it yet - just a matter of finding time to do it...
Due for an MOT this month :O
It'll be for sale in the summer, restored (more or less) to it's former glory! (phelpsy's got first refusal on it now tho!) Need to make room for the other projects :)
Did it have those 5 spoke's on when you had it? (with the wrong size tyres on...!)
Do you have any of the history? (paperwork etc?) I've got some from phelpsy, but there's not much :(
When i had it, it didnt have a dump valve, air cleaner of any sorts (just a pipe!) no boost gauge, a 1 bar map sensor (lol ) and it was only running 6 psi :D
This ones begining to sound like mine but in worse nick. oh well joff should get to see it soon and i get to see how far an old friend has got ( not very).

Hi Joff,
Sorry for the delay in replying but l don't often visit the site now that l've sold my two 21 t's  and l never received an e-mail saying my one had been replied to otherwise l would have replied sooner.
Yes it did have the original 5 spoke alloys on it when l sold it, at the time of sale it only had one tyre the wrong size OSR (as my boy worked at a tyre place and he got an old tyre fitted just so that l could move the car about while it was off the road). It was also fitted with a working dump valve along with a dash mounted boost gauge (also working) when it was sold, though when the guy picked up the car (without T & T and after it had been sitting for about 6 months) he raced off from my house for only the boost pipe from the turbo to blow off down the road
When l went to buy it, it was advertised as a non runner (overheating because of a burst water pipe) l purchased a pipe prior to collecting the car, after fitting the said pipe l noticed that the water wasn't going around the system correctly, upon investigation l noticed that the water pump belt wasn't there  , so a quick rush about to get anew one (as it was a sunday afternoon) once fitted all was well. Also when l picked it up the dash lights didn't work (turned out the connector had come off the back off the dimmer switch), the only other thing that l can remember not working was the diff switch (didn't get that working), l cannot remember getting much in the way of service history apart from afew motor factor receipts.
Regards Kerry
Thanks for the reply Kerry, any info is good :)
